Bollywood is India’s version of California’s Hollywood, but the films are a little different from typical American films.

The B comes from Bombay (also known as Mumbai), a big city in India. Bollywood is massive. It makes up to 800 films a year - twice as many as Hollywood and about 14 million Indian people go to the cinema everyday.

BSMART’s Bollywood Dance Club started as a fitness and cultural excursion in 2009.  BSMART’s Bollywood Dance Club welcomes dancers of any age to join us at our Cedar House location. No experience is necessary!

The group has grown to include girls from many of the island’s schools and from varying backgrounds and cultures.

Our current dancers represent:

  • Saltus
  • Berkeley Institute
  • Warwick Academy
  • BHS
  • Northlands Primary
  • Whitney Institute

Through our style of dance we have exposed many people, islanders and tourists alike, to the flavor, colours, music and culture of Bollywood.

We are the first and only regularly performing Bollywood dance team in Bermuda and each time we dance, we bring a different flavor of artistic development to the forefront of our multi-cultural community.

Our dancers have performed at:

  •  Bacardi International’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations
  •  Agricultural Exhibition
  •  Harbour Nights
  • Miss Bermuda Pageant
  • School Functions & Community Centre Fairs
  •  Bda. Junior Library
  •  Somerset Cricket Clubs Majorette and Dance Extravaganza
  •  Shelly Bay’s Dance and Majorette Event
  • Bda. Day Parade
  • Bda. Cablevision’s Unity in Diversity Night
  • Private events: Birthday Parties & Weddings

We have high level of love and commitment from our girls. Although it is hard work, we are a dance club and not a dance school. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the younger girls want to sit out sometimes to watch the older girls. It gives the girls time to interact and build friendships with other girls from different backgrounds and schools. It also gives me the opportunity to mentor our impressionable young girls, giving them the self-confidence and determination to be able to stand on their own building their own sense of respect for themselves, their bodies and their peers.

Why Bollywood?

I’m not Indian (as far as I know), but I love Bollywood!
While I’ve had no formal dance training, I love to dance.

Nevertheless, I started my own Bollywood Dance Team in 2009. Having one Sri Lankan student in my class, gave me the idea to look into the arts of other cultures. From there, I have no recollection of the timeline of events or why I settled on Bollywood, but I did.

It’s been six years since we started and I’m still choreographing today. Admittedly, we don’t perform traditional Bollywood as there are so many styles and it is a truly difficult, yet beautiful dance form.
